Gerry received an Emmy award in 1992 for his story on the uncertain future of Memorial Stadium. He received a second Emmy award in 2003 for a tribute special to the late Johnny Unitas. Additionally, Gerry has also earned two Edward R. Murrow awards.

He was born in Baltimore, the United States to his father John Sandusky, and his mother. Gerry’s father played in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers. He later became an assistant coach for several NFL teams and head coach for the Baltimore Colts. Gerry’s had a brother who played football at the University of Tulsa. Sadly, he died from complications of pneumonia in 1978 at the age of 19.
