Patrick Mahomes (Full name: Patrick Lavon Mahomes II) is an American football quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He won the Super Bow making him the third African-American quarterback after Doug Williams and Russell Wilson and the second-youngest quarterback after Ben Roethlisberger. Initially, Mahomes played college baseball and college football at Texas Tech University. He left baseball in his sophomore year, to focus solely on football.
Mahomes led all NCAA Division I FBS players in his junior year, in multiple categories including passing yards and total touchdowns. He then entered the 2017 NFL Draft, he was the tenth overall selection by the Chiefs. Mahomes spent his rookie season as the backup to Alex Smith, a free agent American football quarterback. He was then named the starter after the Chiefs traded Smith to the Washington Redskins. He threw for 5,097 yards, 12 interceptions, and 50 touchdowns, that season. Mahomes became the only quarterback in history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season in both college and the NFL and joined Peyton Manning.
Mahomes led the Chiefs to Super Bowl LIV, during the 2019–20 playoffs, where they defeated the San Francisco 49ers for their first Super Bowl victory since 1970. He received the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player for his performance, the second African-American quarterback to earn the award after Doug Williams, and youngest overall. In 2020, Mahomes signed a 10-year contract extension of $477 million with another $26 million bonuses, making it the second-largest known contract in sporting history. He made the Super Bowl again, however, Mahomes lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9–31 in 2021. In his NFL career, the loss was the first by double digits.
