Shields was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2013. Despite an initially grim “inoperable’’ diagnosis his two Dana-Farber Cancer Institute doctors David Jackman and Raymond Mak assured him they would see what they could do for him. They maxed him out on chemo and radiation and had his final PET scan. The results left Shields and his wife hugging and his doctors high fiving. Later in January 2014, he announced his cancer-free state and ready to go back to work.
