Interesting, Dames started to like weather and that inspired him to be a meteorologist. He enrolled in Eastern Illinois University for Broadcast Meteorology and later graduated.
He experienced a very devastating F-5 tornado in Ilinois the day before school started on August 28, 1990. Unfortunately, the destruction was massive and it forever changed their lives as a community. Dames went to school in mobile units for his first years because the school was destroyed. Due to his experience with the 1990 tornadoes, Dames is always afraid of storms.
