Stan Stovall is an American retired journalist who was among the America’s most recognizable faces in the Baltimore TV market. He previously worked at WBAL-TV 11 News as the co-anchor of the weekend edition. Stan joined the network in April 2003 where he worked until his retirement in November 2022.
He commenced his broadcasting career at 17 in Phoenix, AZ in 1970 where he was the first African-American news reporter in Arizona. A year later Stan became the youngest TV news anchor in the US. From 1978 to 1983, he was the primary anchor of 11 News on the weekday evening editions. It was termed “rejoined,” since it is Stan’s second tenure with WBAL-TV 11. Since he returned to report for WBAL-TV 11, he climbed the ladder quickly.
In August 2003, Stan was elevated to co-anchor of the weekday editions that aired at 11 News Today and 11 News at Noon. He was again promoted to co-anchor at 5 p.m. for the 11 News. Stan was promoted again to co-anchor of 11 News at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m in December 2013. Formerly, he worked at WMAR-TV in Baltimore where he spent 13 years as the main evening news anchor before leaving in 2000.

At the age of 5, Stan remembers visiting his paternal great-grandmother in 1958 on her deathbed and seeing Jim Crow South for the very first time. His family later relocated to Phoenix when he was eight years old. Stan was brought up alongside his younger brother Darrell. While in elementary and junior high schools, Stan and his brother Darrell were the only black students. A day did not pass in school without them being called the “N” word. His parents followed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s teachings and preached nonviolence to him and his brother.
Stan’s mother was the first African-American sales clerk to work at the local Woolworth’s. At the age of 10, he got his first print job as a paper boy. Stan attended Carl Hayden High School where he was a star athlete and a scholar. He later enrolled at Arizona State University in 1971 as a full-time student where he studied and also did journalism work at 1 pm. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree and in 1973 was already working live on-air as a host for the 6 and 10 p.m newscasts.

Even after his retirement in September 2022, Stan says that he will continue to work out until the day he dies.
