Larry Madowo is a Kenyan journalist and writer. Currently, he has been working as an International Correspondent for CNN based in Nairobi since July 2021. Furthermore, Madowo is also the host of the African Voices Changemakers.

Before, he was the station’s Nairobi Correspondent. Prior to joining CNN, he was working as a North America Correspondent for the BBC, based in Washington, DC. While working as a journalist, Madowo was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2020. He was also ranked among the Most Influential Africans 2018 by NewAfrican Magazine.

Early Life And Education

Madowo was born in Barding village in Siaya County and grew up in Siaya, Kisumu, and Nairobi. His father Mr. Madowo died in 1994 when he was 7 years old. Madowo’s mother, Treazer Anyango Madowo, was a primary school teacher. She was a divisional Knut official who enthusiastically took part in the 1997 strike. Treazer rallied her colleagues to go out onto the streets following a strike directive from the then KNUT officials John Katumanga and Ambrose Adongo Adeya.

Madowo’s mother died in 2001 leaving him and his only sibling Liz Madowo orphans. Liz is a graduate of Moi University and a stylist as well as a fashion blogger. He enrolled in Usingo and Karapul primary schools. Madowo then attended St Gabriel’s Seminary for secondary education.

He had aimed to train as a Catholic priest, but by the time he finished high school, it changed. Madowo graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication degree from Daystar University, located in Athi River Machakos County near Nairobi in June 2014. Subsequently, he graduated from Columbia receiving a Master of Arts in Business and Economics Journalism on 20 May 2020.
