Jim Donovan is an American radio and television journalist. Recently, he served as a sports director and news anchor for WKYC Channel 3 (NBC) in Cleveland, Ohio until June 2024. Donovan has also been the radio voice of the Cleveland Browns Radio Network since 1999. He has won 15 times Emmy Awards and joined CBS 3 as its “On Your Side” consumer reporter in 2004.
In April 2016, Donovan stepped up to the anchor desk to relaunch the station’s morning newscast. Previously, he covered the coverage of Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia in 2015. Sadly, Donovan was in the headlines when he announced that he had been battling leukemia for 10 years. For that reason, he took leave from broadcasting in order to undergo a bone marrow transplant.

He graduated from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey where Donovan earned a Bachelor of Communication Arts degree. Subsequently, he commenced his career as a sports director for WJON radio in St. Cloud, Minnesota. From Minnesota, Donovan moved to Vermont, providing play-by-play basketball and hockey coverage for the Satellite News Channel in Burlington, Vermont.

Illness
He was diagnosed with CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) in 2000. Since then, Donovan has navigated a lengthy and arduous journey, culminating in a successful bone marrow transplant in the summer of 2011. He reported on May 31, 2023 that his leukemia had relapsed and would be once again undergoing treatment. On September 10, 2023, after his broadcast of the opening game of the 2023 season for the Browns, Donovan reported he would step away from announcing Browns games to undergo leukemia treatment.

Donovan stepped away from daily television on June 10, 2024 but, he will continue to serve as the radio play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Browns, a role he has held since the team returned to the NFL in 1999.
Update
In February 2024, Donovan reached a milestone in his battle against leukemia. He, who has battled the disease since the fall, forcing him to temporarily leave the Browns broadcast booth, reported he has finished his radiation treatments and “moving on to a different phase of treatment.”
